Name of the Project
Tâmega pumped hydropower scheme.

Location
The project will be located on the Torno river, in northern Portugal.

Project Owner/s
Iberdrola.

Project Description
The project will be built in several stages and comprises the Gouvaes (880 MW), Daivoes (114 MW) and Alto Tâmega (164 MW) hydro-power plants for a total capacity of 1158 MW.

The plants will increase Portugal’s installed capacity by 6%.

Gouvaes entails the construction of an underground main machine hall (120 m long, 20 m wide and 44 m high) to hold four 220 MW generators and the underground transformer hall (80 m long, 17 m wide and 14 m high). About 5 km of galleries and eight vertical shafts measuring up to 320 m and with a diameter of 7 m will also be excavated.

Daivoes entails the construction of a concrete-arch gravity dam 77.5 m high and 264 m long, together with a power plant housing two turbines. The project includes the construction of a 388 m tunnel to divert the river, and a weir 71 m long and 10.5 m high, about 2.2 km downstream of the dam.

Potential Job Creation
About 13500 jobs are expected to be created.

Capital Expenditure
€1.5-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Gouvaes is expected to enter service in 2021, and Daivoes and Alto Tamega in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Latest Developments
Iberdrola received its largest-ever green loan granted from Spain’s Instituto de Credito Oficial, amounting to €400-million (US$446-million) in May. The loan has a 12-year maturity and two-year grace period for principal. The funds will be used for towards the Tamega pumped hydropower scheme.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Andritz (electromechanical equipment and penstock supplier); EFACEC Energia, Maquinas Equipamentos Electricos (transformer supplier); Eptisa (geotechnical, hydraulic and civil engineering works); Ferrovial Agroman, including MSF (construction contractor – Gouvaes and Daivoes), TPF (design consultant).

On Budget and on Time?
Too early to state.
